The AI group commenced in October 2024, and meets at 10am-12noon on the 1st Tuesday of the month, in the Scout Group HQ at 32 West Bond St SK11 8EQ.
There are over 30 members in the group, but we welcome anyone wanting to find out about AI. If you are interested in joining us, please click on the leader's name at the top of the page to access the contact link.
The intention is to have some meetings on the impact and social relevance and some on the technical “how to” aspects of AI. Will the supermarket know what I’ll buy before I even pick up the trolley? Will it change how lawyers prepare arguments in court? What can we do ourselves on our laptops? Is an AI query better than an internet search engine – when is one better? Can you tell when an essay has been written using AI? Would you be happy if the HR department used AI to select a new recruit?
The group will discuss all applications of AI and how it might affect us – good and bad. What impact will it have on society? What opportunities will it create and what risks are inherent with it?
We will explore some of the many tools and determine which we find helpful (it is a fast-moving space, so we’re unlikely to settle on one). We’ll trial some and discuss the features and cost of them. We expect it will be a very steep learning curve – but it should be exciting. Members will be encouraged to bring their knowledge to the table.
There is also a Tech sub-group that looks how AI systems work, what makes them work, which means that the main group doesn't need to get into technicalities, and the sub-group reports to the main group.
An AI Glossary has been created.
