We meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 2 to 4pm in group member’s houses.
There are currently 13 members of our friendly, enthusiastic group, which has been running for more than 10 years. We are a sociable group, meeting in member’s houses. Our aim each session is to converse in German as much as possible. The first part of each meeting is called, “Was gibt’s Neues” where each member reports, in German, on their recent activities. Other members may ask questions or contribute further to each report. Then there is a traditional German break for “Kaffee (oder Tee) und Kuchen. The second part of the meeting will be a variety of activities to encourage us to speak German. We might play games in German, such as Scrabble, Just a Minute or a German version of Taboo called Tabu. We might discuss favourite books, paintings or destinations or we might read and translate pieces from German magazines or newspapers. Recently we have read a short German book about Sophie Scholl, the Resistance Worker.
Within the group, members have varying abilities in their knowledge of the German language, but we are very supportive of one another and we always have dictionaries on hand if we get stuck.
Attendance at our meetings varies because of holidays/appointments and family commitments. If you have some previous knowledge of German and would like to spend time with like-minded people with an interest in the German language and the German way of life, please contact the group leader.
